ATMs and money are two things that are inextricably linked. Without an ATM, you cannot withdraw money, receive your salary or transfer from a friend. But there are situations when someone forgot money at an ATM of Sberbank or VTB, and you came to withdraw money - and there the money is already there. And you have a desire to pick them up. It seems to you that you have found the money, although in reality it is not so. More on this later.

Why do people forget money at an ATM?

There are several reasons why a person may forget the money they have just withdrawn from a bank ATM:
  • Forgetfulness. Thinking about something else, the client can automatically withdraw money, pick up the card and check, but forget the bills themselves. For example, a person may be distracted (phone call, acquaintance passing by and starting a conversation, etc.)
  • ATM malfunction. There are frequent cases when ATMs of Sberbank and other credit organizations simply do not issue money immediately due to bugs in the system. They give the customer a card, and the money is "spit out" later.

Why can't someone take money forgotten from an ATM?

You should not take money if you go to the ATM and realize that someone has left it in the cash dispenser. This is fraught with accusations under the article "Theft". Depending on the amount assigned, it can be classified in different ways:
  • For theft in a significant amount, the victim is punished with a fine of up to 200 thousand rubles, compulsory work up to 480 hours, imprisonment up to 5 years.
  • For theft on a large scale, a fine is from 100 to 500 thousand rubles, forced labor for up to 5 years, imprisonment for up to 6 years and payment of a fine in the amount of 80 thousand rubles.
  • For theft on an especially large scale, a punishment of up to 10 years of imprisonment is provided with a fine of up to 1 million rubles.

Don't underestimate the system and hope no one sees you. They see and record cameras, which are mandatory installed in all places where ATMs are located. An additional camera is located directly in the ATM at the level of the person's face.

If a person took someone else's money in a cash dispenser, they will certainly be found and convicted.

A striking example of such a situation was the incident that occurred in 2015 in Norilsk. Then the woman embezzled 40,000 rubles left at the ATM. She spent them on personal needs. The man turned to the police with a statement about the theft of funds from the card.

It turned out that the man tried to withdraw money from the card that day, but the ATM refused to carry out the operation. After the man left, the ATM still gave out cash, which the woman appropriated. She saw the money PayPaling out of the ATM and took it.

We managed to identify and find her from the cameras. She is accused of violating Art. 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which provides for up to 5 years in prison.

What if I went to an ATM and there was money?

If you find money at an ATM, be sure to look around and call the person who just walked away from the device, tell them that he forgot his money.

If there is no one around, you did not see who exactly walked away from the ATM, then you need to photograph the forgotten money (or better record a video) at the ATM and call the employee of the credit institution (if the situation occurred at the bank branch during working hours).

If everything happens in the evening / at night, then just do not go to the ATM until he takes the money back. The fact is that unclaimed money or cards are taken back by the ATM if no one has taken them within 40 seconds.

After that, you can go to the ATM and perform the planned operation using your card.

If the ATM did not take the money back, it is better to refrain from withdrawing cash from it. For it may happen that when you withdraw money from your card, the ATM will freeze and will not give you money.

What if you have already taken someone else's money from an ATM?
Some citizens can take other people's money at an ATM to return it to the forgotten one. Of course, you shouldn't do this and generally approach them.

If it turned out that you took someone else's money from an ATM, it is better to immediately contact the bank branch and report what happened. In this case, no one will accuse anyone of embezzlement, because the person found someone else's thing and returned it.

If it's evening or the ATM is in a grocery store, it's better to take the find to the police. There they will draw up an act with a detailed description of what happened, report to the bank and find the owner.

Another option is to contact the police immediately. Call the person on duty and clarify what is so and so when you were withdrawing money. Better to do it right away. There is a possibility that the victim will contact the police before you. You will be found by a photo or by a card with which you later withdraw money. Then you will become accused in a criminal case under the article "Theft" with all that it implies.

What if I forgot money at a VTB or another bank ATM?

If it so happens that you forgot the money at the ATM, but did not find it, be sure to return to the ATM. Perhaps someone found them and is looking for the rightful owner of the funds. Of course, this is possible only in the first minutes after cash withdrawal.

If your money is not in the ATM and there is no one around, write down the ATM number and call the bank's hotline to report the incident. According to you, a bank employee will fill out a claim application, which the bank will consider within 30 days.

If the situation occurred during working hours, it is better to contact the bank's office and write a statement there, and not draw up by phone.

The application will be assigned a separate number. The client will be informed about the results of the consideration in an SMS message. When an SMS arrives on the phone, the client will need to contact the department where he left the application. There he will be given a written answer from the bank. In most cases, the money is returned to the client in full.
