Human rights activists demand to stop the practice of mind manipulation and punish the platform for deception.

The European Center for Digital Rights, better known as NOYB (Non Of Your Business), accuses X of illegally using users political views and religious beliefs to display targeted (targeted) advertising.

The charges relate to a campaign to promote the regulation of "chat control" in the Netherlands, where X used specially protected data to select the ad audience.

It is noteworthy that at first a similar complaint was filed against the EU Commission itself for "illegal use of microtargeting". And when the Commission stopped serving ads, NOYB decided to take action against X as a platform that has access to sensitive user data and can use it to its advantage.

NOYB alleges that X misuses the use of information for targeted advertising, including political views and religious beliefs obtained by monitoring clicks, likes, and responses to posts. In September of this year, the European Commission used this information to promote a controversial proposal to regulate chat rooms in X. The platform allowed commission ads to accurately reach the desired audience based on their political and religious views.

In addition, NOYB points out that X violates its own advertising rules. While X states that political affiliation and religious beliefs should not be used for targeted advertising, it appears that the platform itself does not comply with this prohibition.

"On paper, X prohibits the use of sensitive data for political advertising, but in practice, the company still benefits from techniques that we know about since the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018," says Maartje de Graaf, a data protection lawyer at NOYB.

In addition, NOYB accuses X of violating the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Digital Services Act (DSA).

This incident demonstrates the need for tougher regulation of technology companies regarding the use of personal data. Platforms are required to comply with their own rules and statutory privacy standards. Only if their activities are fully transparent can the rights of citizens be respected.
