The cyber police of the Ivano-Frankivsk region stopped the activities of a group of individuals who hacked the accounts of users of a popular social network and sent messages on their behalf asking them to borrow money: more than a million hryvnias of cash were seized from them. Law enforcement officers sent the indictment to the court.

In October last year, cyber police operatives, together with investigators from the investigative department of the Regional Prosecutor's Office under the procedural guidance of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Prosecutor's office, identified three men who gained access to other people's accounts of a popular social network.

The attackers acted by selecting a password using malicious software. You can protect your account from this type of hacking by setting up two-factor authentication and using strong passwords.

After that, the defendants sent false messages asking for a loan of money on behalf of the owners and indicated the numbers of controlled bank accounts.

During the searches, law enforcement officers seized evidence of illegal activities, including more than 1 million hryvnias. The funds were seized.

Investigators of the regional headquarters identified two dozen victims who were deceived by fraudsters. The total amount of losses exceeds 150 thousand hryvnias.

Law enforcement officers have completed a pre-trial investigation under Part 2, 3 of Article 190 (Fraud), Part 1 of Article 209 (Legalization (laundering) of property obtained by criminal means).Part 1 of Article 361-1 (Creation for the purpose of illegal use, distribution or sale of malicious software or technical means, as well as their distribution or sale)Part 1, 2 of Article 361 (Unauthorized interference in the operation of information (automated), electronic communication, information and communication systems, electronic communication networks) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The defendants face up to 6 years in prison.
