The Spanish National Police has warned customers of various online platforms, such as Amazon, about the danger of losing their personal data after throwing a box of goods in the trash. It is noted that we are talking about such cases as if the user first received the parcel, opened it, took out a new phone or laptop and then threw the box in the trash.
The material of law enforcement agencies indicates that a day after this garbage was in a street container, the client receives a suspicious letter allegedly from Amazon. It contains a notification that the laptop or phone has significant technical problems and needs to be returned immediately. In this case, the bank card number used for the purchase is also requested to refund the full cost of the product.
However, the police said that this is not Amazon at all, but ordinary scammers who received information from the sticker of the box that the client of the Internet platform threw out. It is reported that several thousand Spaniards have already fallen into this trap.
This phenomenon is called "immersion in a dumpster". It is a common type of fraud, when criminals literally dig through the garbage in order to find confidential information. They then use it to cheat, carry out cyber attacks, or gain access to private networks.
It is known that a sticker from an Amazon box, as well as a flash drive with important documents, medical records or bills, passwords, commercial data, can be found in a pile of household waste. To protect yourself from losing your personal data, it is recommended that you destroy all documents and packages containing personal information before disposing of them in a common outdoor container.
