Experts who monitor the activity of cybercriminals recorded a 30% increase in the number of ads related to the purchase of bank cards in October-November.

Cards of regional banks and those that are elements of marketplace ecosystems are especially in high demand.

Experts attributed this activity to the fact that financial institutions began to block suspicious accounts more often, and scammers needed new drops, whose accounts did not have time to get into the "black lists" of the Bank of Russia.

Also, due to the activity of fraudsters, completely law-abiding citizens may also be included in the stop lists of the Central Bank.

Internet analyst Maxim Gorbunov, who studies the drop market, in a comment for Izvestia, linked the increase in the activity of attackers also with the improvement of anti-money laundering procedures at banks.

These measures dictate new requirements that appeared in the amendments to the law "On the National Payment System", adopted in July 2024.

According to Maxim Gorbunov, cards of the largest banks continue to be in the highest demand among attackers. But he noted the growing interest of scammers in the clients of small banks, including those that are part of marketplace ecosystems.

Scammers usually recruit teenagers and people in difficult life situations as drops. As experts interviewed by Izvestia noted, they are attracted under the guise of remote work or business assistance, promising a certain income for transfers through their accounts. In total, according to Sberbank, there are about 2 million droppers in Russia.

"Usually, teenagers and vulnerable segments of the population become droppers," Irina Zinovkina, head of analytical research at Positive Technologies, explained to Izvestia. "But you need to understand that sometimes a person can become a dropper unconsciously: for example, scammers send a certain amount to a phone number, then write that they made a mistake, and ask to return the money to a certain card or account".
