Previously, scammers called Russians and introduced themselves as employees of government agencies. Intimidating with the blocking of accounts, they tried to lure one-time SMS codes for authorization, and then stole profiles and money from bank accounts. People have already stopped believing these fairy tales and just hang up. Meanwhile, the annoying scammers have come up with a new scheme.
"Such calls already account for 30% of the total number of attacks. Such schemes have become especially common during the tax period, which makes them even more dangerous. Hacking an account on public services can lead to serious consequences: loss of personal data, access to banking applications, and ultimately to the withdrawal of money from accounts. To protect yourself, it is important not to share SMS codes and personal data with strangers, use caller ID, and remain vigilant when receiving suspicious calls — Nikita Chugunov, Senior Vice President, VTB.
According to analytics for 2024, more than 85% of Russians contacted by scammers independently transferred money to anonymous accounts, withdrew cash, gave it to unknown persons, and shared personal information with them.
Scammers can also pretend to be employees of the Russian Post.
Double calls from scammers: how the new deception scheme works
- A fraudster calls the user and introduces himself as an employee of government agencies. They report the availability of a registered letter, for example, from the tax service and ask to which address to send the notification - e-mail or postal. When the victim agrees to receive a notification, the scammers ask for a verification code to fill out the application. Soon, the phone receives a message from state portals with the text "access recovery code" to the account;
- At this stage, most Russians feel the catch and hang up;
- A few minutes later, the user receives a second call, allegedly from real employees of the same government agency. They say that earlier he was called by attackers that now his account has been hacked, and it is necessary to urgently protect it - to provide the code from the SMS to restore access.
- At this point, the person is under psychological pressure, fully trusts them, and becomes a victim of further deception.
