Scammers who have mastered voice communication in instant messengers have come up with a new excuse to gain access to RBS accounts. They call on behalf of major Russian banks and offer to extend the validity period of the card.

VTB warned about a new trick of telephone scammers, emphasizing that bank card service in Russia is now extended automatically. As part of this deception scheme, a number of fake bank accounts were created in instant messengers, from which calls are received.

Those who are concerned about the expiration date of the card are sent an external link to the malicious file and asked to dictate a one-time code that will be sent as an SMS to their smartphone. After receiving the keys to the personal account in online banking, attackers will be able to withdraw money from the account or apply for a loan in the name of the victim.

"We ask all people to be more vigilant, to use protection, for example, caller ID or blocking unknown incoming messages on a smartphone," advises Nikita Chugunov, Senior Vice President of VTB, head of the Digital Business Department. — Let me also remind you that since 2020, banks have started to extend the service of cards even with expired validity. Now VTB issues cards to customers for 7 years, but they work indefinitely, and they do not need to be renewed, unless this is due to physical wear and tear."

Fraudsters have previously worked under similar scenarios — for example, they calledon behalf of the telecom operator and informed about the need to extend the validity of the SIM card or contract. Under this pretext, they tried to gain access to the subscriber's personal account or his Services account.
