Employees of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Orel region, together with employees of the Combined Police Detachment of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the LPR, stopped the activities of an interregional organized group. Its participants are suspected of a series of phone scams.
"It was previously established that the detainees had been embezzling funds of elderly people for a long time. The deception took place according to the standard scheme. Unknown people called pensioners and reported that their relatives were responsible for a road accident. To avoid criminal prosecution, they demanded to transfer large sums of money through intermediaries. Couriers came to the defrauded people and collected the money. They kept some of the funds for themselves, and transferred the rest through the bank accounts of front persons to the organizers of the criminal business.
Last year, six elderly residents of the city of Orel became victims of fraud. The total damage exceeded one million rubles. As a result of operational search activities, police officers detained five members of an organized group who played various roles in the criminal scheme. Then operatives established that the call center of swindlers was located in an abandoned building in the village of Izvarino of the Luhansk People's Republic. The alleged organizers of the criminal business were detained there. During the searches, computer equipment, mobile phones, SIM cards, documentation, bank cards and other items of evidentiary value were seized," said Irina Volk, an official representative of the Russian Interior Ministry.
An investigator of the Investigative Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation for the Orel region is investigating a criminal case on the grounds of a crime under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. In respect of all seven defendants, a preventive measure was chosen in the form of remand in custody.
"The police are checking information about the possible involvement of detainees in similar illegal acts on the territory of other subjects of the Russian Federation," Irina Volk added.
