Samsung smartphones and tablets are believed to be preinstalled with spyware that regularly accesses servers located in China. This is a feature called Device Care, implemented on all smartphones and tablets of the South Korean manufacturer.

One of the users of the Reddit forum drew attention to the problem, noting that this function is related to the Chinese company Qihoo 360, which has previously been repeatedly featured in scandals related to hidden data collection. While Samsung itself has confirmed that the Device Care Storage module is powered by Qihoo, the company has not provided any information as to why it is sending data to China.

“The Storage scanner on your phone has full access to all personal data (since it is part of the system) and, according to Chinese law, will send data when requested,” explains the user.

As it turns out, when launched, the function communicates with several Chinese servers, although it is currently unknown what data is being transferred.

“Unfortunately, I was not able to figure out what exactly is being transmitted to the servers, since for this I would have to carry out a man-in-the-middle attack on my phone, which requires superuser rights,” the user writes.

Samsung has not yet commented on the situation. Meanwhile, a number of users of its devices have already launched a petition asking them to remove the Qihoo 360 software from their smartphones.
