An investigation into a cyberespionage mission could lead to the most unexpected discoveries.

Major U.S. telecommunications companies, including T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon and Lumen Technologies, have been subjected to a massive cyberespionage attack from China. This was recently reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing its sources.

An investigation by the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Agency (CISA) found that Chinese intelligence was behind the attack. It was established that the attackers gained access to the networks of several telecommunications operators at once.

Hackers were able to steal customer call data, compromise the private communications of a limited number of people associated with government or political activities, and copy information that is regulated by U.S. law.

According to experts, the attackers used highly sophisticated methods. The operation involved the Salt Typhoon group, also known as GhostEmperor and FamousSparrow. Traces of the hackers' activity point to a prolonged and targeted campaign. It is expected that later the scale of the incident will become even clearer.

T-Mobile representatives added that they continue to work with industry colleagues and relevant departments to prevent further threats. Prompt action is taken as new information becomes available.

This incident was another confirmation of the growing activity of Chinese cyber groups, whose goal is to collect information in strategically important industries. This underscores the need to strengthen cyber defenses at all levels.
