Hacktivists reported data theft and network failures.
Israeli hacktivists have claimed responsibility for the current Internet outages in Iran. The group, known as WeRedEvils, has been in existence since October 2023 and probably emerged in response to the Hamas attack on Israel that led to the current war in Gaza.
On their Telegram page, WeRedEvils announced: "In the next few minutes, we will attack the systems and Internet service providers in Iran. A powerful blow is expected." According to them, the attack was successful: it was possible to penetrate the computer systems of Iran, steal data and cause a failure on the Internet. Hacktivists claim to have passed the stolen information to the Israeli government.
As proof, WeRedEvils pointed out that the website of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies of Iran (ict.gov.ir) does not work, as do most other websites of Iranian ministries that give the error "response time is too long". Some sites also displayed a 403 error, which may indicate that access was denied.
At the time of publication, we were able to find only two pages of government ministries available in Russia: Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs of Iran. The WeRedEvils also stated on Telegram: "We know that there are supporters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps among you, and we want to contact you personally. Stop raising red flags and start raising white ones. This madness will put you all in the dustbin of history. Iran will burn – Israel will win."
However, it is not known how much damage WeRedEvils really caused and whether they are fully responsible for the current Internet outages, given Iran's closeness in such matters.
The group also claimed to have attacked Iran's electricity grid last October and shut it down for two hours, possibly their first attack. The WeRedEvils became so well known even in Israel that in June, Israel's Shin Bet security agency arrested "several members" of the group on espionage charges.
