The experience of interacting with single-board computers becomes even more comfortable and functional.
The new version of the Raspberry Pi OS operating system, released under the number 2023-12-05, presents significant updates and improvements. The system is based on Debian 12 "Bookworm" and is supported by the Linux 6.1.63 LTS kernel.
The main feature of this update is improved support for the latest Raspberry Pi 5 model. The developers added support for switching the serial port in the rc_gui and raspi-config tools, and also updated the Mathematica and Scratch 3 applications to work on the new single-board Raspberry Pi model and on 64-bit ARM installations.
In addition, the new version of the operating system has a dark GTK theme, which can be activated in the appearance settings. Additionally, a battery monitoring plugin was added to the default panel, a new menu item "taskbar settings" in the panel context menu, and support for Qt applications was improved by harmonizing the GTK+2 and GTK+3 themes.
In the area of translation and localization, the developers added German to the appearance settings and restored the link to The Magpi website in the main menu.
Raspberry Pi OS 2023-12-05 also includes improvements for touch screens, supporting identification with unique strings for each device, which ensures correct mapping to displays. Added compatibility with Raspberry Pi 1 displays, improved Wayfire visualization, and added gpiod and python3-venv tools to the lightweight version of Raspberry Pi OS.
The update also affects the main applications: the operating system now includes Mozilla Firefox 119 and Chromium 119.0.6045.171 web browsers (with automatic updates to Firefox 120 after the first launch), Python IDE Thonny 4.1.4, as well as a new version of the WayVNC server for Wayland composers based on wlroots with improved support for encrypted connections.
In addition to this, various bugs have been fixed, including improved support for USB audio devices, volume hotkeys, window titles when placed in tiles, installing local DEB packages, system updates, and the GPU plugin, and some window manager crashes have been fixed.
