How will government regulation of AI help the U.S. keep up with the rest of the world?

More than 60 companies, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions have asked the U.S. Congress to pass legislation to create the AI Safety Institute at NIST.

The main message of the appeal emphasizes the need to continue to develop responsible AI standards, as other countries are already creating their own AI safety institutions. The letter emphasizes that the United States should not lag behind in the global AI technology race, and to ensure national security and competitiveness, it is necessary to establish an AI Safety Institute on a permanent basis.

The letter was signed by companies such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft, defense contractors Lockheed Martin and Palantir, as well as AI model developers OpenAI and Anthropic. Universities are also among the signatories, including Carnegie Mellon.

Federal bills propose to develop voluntary standards for AI safety, in contrast to California's tougher bill SB 1047, which required mandatory measures and was recently rejected by Governor Gavin Newsom due to concerns for the state's economy.
