Glass plates can be the key to eternal data storage.

Microsoft Research, the research arm of Microsoft Corporation, is testing how to store a huge amount of data on glass plates as part of the Project Silica initiative. If successful, such a solution can ensure the safety of information for thousands of years without loss of quality.

Data is stored in the glass using three-dimensional pixels (voxels). Unlike traditional data storage methods such as magnetic disks, Project Silica glass plates will preserve data for thousands of years, creating a sustainable storage for the entire world.
