How do attacked medical institutions deal with the emerging cyber threat?
German hospital chain Katholische Hospitalvereinigung Ostwestfalen (KHO) has confirmed that the recent disruption to three hospitals in Bielefeld, Reda-Wiedenbruck and Herford was caused by a Lockbit ransomware attack. The attack occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, December 24, seriously affecting the systems that support the operation of these medical institutions.
According to the hospitals statement, unidentified individuals gained access to their IT infrastructure and encrypted the data. Preliminary analysis showed that this was a cyberattack using the Lockbit 3.0 ransomware program. The system recovery time is still unknown.
As a security measure, immediately after the attack was detected, all systems were turned off, and all necessary authorities and institutions were informed.
An investigation is currently underway, and the full extent of the damage and whether the data was stolen has not yet been determined.
The cyberattack affected three hospitals that are part of the KHO network. It is important to note that each of them plays a key role in providing medical services in their region, so an attack on their IT systems can have serious consequences for people who find themselves in a critical situation.
KHO said in a statement that the treatment of patients continues as usual, despite some technical limitations. Restoring backups saved access to basic patient information.
However, ambulance services in these three hospitals are temporarily unavailable, which can lead to critical delays in the provision of emergency medical care.
At the time of writing, the Lockbit group has not yet added KHO to its dark web leak site, so it is still unknown whether patient data or other sensitive information was stolen.
