A California - based company is calling for a step forward to eliminate outdated passwords.

Today, Google announced the ability to use a password-less authorization technology called "Passkey" or "access key" by default for all user accounts. This happened five months after the company announced that it would implement support for this standard for all accounts and on all Google platforms.

"This means that the next time you log in to your account, you will be prompted to create and use an access key, which will simplify your authorization in the future," explained Sriram Karra and Christian Brand, product managers at Google.

"This also means that the skip password whenever possible 'option will now be enabled in your Google account settings," the representatives added.

What is Passkeys?
"Passkeys" or "access keys" are a new form of authentication that completely eliminates the need for usernames and passwords. It doesn't even require an additional authentication step. This password - less mechanism uses public-key cryptography to authenticate users access to websites and applications.

Each Passkey is unique and is associated with a user name and a specific service. A user can have as many access keys as they have accounts, and even for one account, several access keys can be configured at once, since they only work within the same platform.

How does it work?
When a user logs in to a website or application that supports access keys, a random request is created and sent to the client. Then the user is required to verify using biometrics or a PIN code in order to sign the request with a private key and send it back to the server. If the signed response can be verified using the associated public key, authentication is considered successful.

The main advantage of access keys is that they not only eliminate the need to remember passwords, but are also resistant to phishing, which protects accounts from potential attacks.

Trends in passwordless access
The innovation from Google followed a similar one from Microsoft, which recently began implementing access keys in Windows 11 to improve account security. Popular platforms such as eBay and Uber have also already implemented access key support in recent months.

In the era of digital transformation, the security of user data comes first. The widespread adoption of Passkeys is a prime example of how the latest cryptographic methods can simplify users lives and increase the level of protection of their personal information.

Such innovations herald an era of a new generation of digital security, where traditional passwords will become a thing of the past, and authentication methods will become even more intuitive and reliable.
