Microsoft is expanding Defender options to all platforms.

Microsoft has introduced updated Defender features to help protect users when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks. Defender VPN has been added to Defender to protect your data from eavesdropping.

Defender now automatically detects unsecured Wi-Fi networks and prompts you to turn on a VPN for a secure connection. VPN support has also been extended to all platforms — Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. In addition, privacy protection now covers more countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada, and support for 10 more countries in Europe, Asia, and Latin America will soon be added.

Protection feature in the iOS interface

If you're connected to public Wi-Fi with minimal security, Defender will immediately send a notification asking you to turn on the VPN. On Android, iOS, and Windows, this already works, and on macOS, the feature will arrive soon. The developers also plan to add automatic VPN activation when connecting to public networks.

It is important to note that Defender VPN will send anonymous data to the company's servers, but it will not collect information about the pages you have browsed, history, personal data, or the physical location of your device.

The service's anonymized data contains information such as the duration of VPN use, the amount of VPN bandwidth used, and the names of Wi-Fi hotspots that have been identified as potentially malicious for threat research purposes (the company claims that the latter are sent to servers only after the user's consent is provided).

Notification of connection to an unsecured Wi-Fi network

For Android and iOS, an additional function has been added to recognize suspicious Wi-Fi networks. Defender algorithms analyze several parameters of the access point and, if the network seems insecure, the user receives a notification and the ability to activate the VPN with one click.

The feature can help protect you from attackers who set up a rogue wireless hotspot to trick you into connecting to it in Evil Twin attacks. Once the victim connects to the network, hackers can steal sensitive information as part of a Man-in-the-Middle (MiTM) attack or use phishing techniques to obtain more information.
