The former CEO of the cryptocurrency company OmegaPro was detained in Istanbul on suspicion of organizing fraud with digital assets and defrauding millions of depositors.
The police detained Andreas Szakacs, despite his new passport issued in the name of Emre Avcı. According to law enforcement agencies, Sakac and his team were able to gain the trust of crypto investors by creating a prestigious image through fake newspaper articles, receiving fictitious awards, conducting large-scale PR campaigns, and distributing large profits to the first participants in the OmegaPro investment program.
They organized a football tournament in Dubai and Panama called the OmegaPro Legends Cup, which featured former soccer stars such as Ronaldinho, Kaka, Wesley Sneijder, John Terry, and Iker Casillas. Subsequently, these players became OmegaPro Ambassadors. OmegaPro's activities have covered Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Argentina, Chile, Hong Kong, Singapore, England, France, Belgium, Nigeria, Congo, India and South Korea.
At the time of peak activity, OmegaPro CEO Andreas Sakac (now Emre Avci) said that in 2.5 years the number of investors exceeded 3 million and continues to grow at an active pace.
The company started its activities in 2019. However, in November 2022, it unexpectedly stopped payments to investors, and then, in July 2023, its organizers announced the liquidation of the business and, according to the investigation, disappeared with the money of depositors. Class action lawsuits against the company have been filed in countries such as France, Nigeria, Colombia, Mexico, Congo, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Myanmar.
During the operation to detain Andreas Sakac, 32 cold wallets were seized, as well as several devices for storing passwords. On the suspect's computer, the police found numerous OmegaPro documents and records of large financial transactions. Sakac pleaded not guilty and refused to provide law enforcement with passwords to cold wallets and other computers that are believed to have run OmegaPro's main servers.
Earlier, Turkish law enforcement agencies detained 127 people on suspicion of involvement in the work of the local fraudulent crypto scheme Smart Trade Coin STC. The project has attracted more than $31 million from investors in recent years.
