How will a leak of hundreds of gigabytes affect the business of the popular franchise?
On January 21, the ransomware group LockBit identified the Subway fast food chain as a victim on its data leak site. According to the attackers, they managed to steal hundreds of gigabytes of confidential company data. The payment of the ransom is given until February 2, after which the stolen information will be published.
"We uploaded the entire internal Subway system, which includes hundreds of gigabytes of data and all the company's financial expectations, including employee salaries, franchise royalties, restaurant turnover, etc. We give them some time to come in and protect this data. If this does not happen, we are open to selling information to competitors," LockBit said.
The group has not yet published any samples of the stolen data. Subway confirms that it is aware of LockBit's claims and is "investigating their validity." The amount of the ransom was not announced.
According to the Ransomlooker service, in 2023, LockBit retained its leading position among ransomware groups — it has over 1,000 incidents on its account, which is almost a quarter of all ransomware attacks. The attackers ' main targets are construction, manufacturing, and retail.
