NCR Corporation introduced the Skimming Protection Solution (SPS), a platform for combating skimmers. NCR 's SPS platform offers financial services organizations the ability to be proactive in the fight against skimmers and ensure the safety of their clients, the company told CNews.
As NCR said, skimmers connect an external device to the ATM reader unit, which reads the data on the magnetic stripe of the user’s card. Additionally, the hacker installs a miniature camera on the ATM to record the PIN entered . The resulting data is used to withdraw money from the cardholder's account.
NCR has built special software into the SPS platform that uses hardware randomization and security mechanisms to make cardholder data impossible to read. This new technology also makes it more difficult to replace or remove the original ATM panel, helping to quickly identify skimming devices. All this allows us to provide the necessary protection for both financial services organizations and their clients, the corporation emphasized.
The SPS solution continuously monitors ATM status and sends relevant information to administrators in real time. Using special software, the SPS platform notifies financial institutions and law enforcement in real time of any attempts to disable or interfere with the reader. This gives the user confidence that their data is safe.
The solution is based on a modular platform, which allows financial institutions to quickly adapt their security system to new threats without the need to shut down ATMs.
