Various US agencies collect data about Americans using the Shadow Dragon platform. Such data is contained in an investigation published by 404 Media journalists.
According to the data provided, the corporation of the same name is one of the key state contractors selling surveillance technologies in social networks and on the Internet in general. In particular, according to internal documentation available to journalists, Shadow Dragon and a number of related developments are actively used by the investigative units of the Immigration and Customs Police, the FBI and drug trafficking services.
"Companies like Shadow Dragon collect a huge amount of information about the activities of Internet users from social networks and other sites. This is mass surveillance, which the government and other organizations have access to, and which curbs online activism," said Jeramie Scott, director of the EPIC Privacy Activist Surveillance Project.
Internal documents from the corporation also revealed that Shadow Dragon's tools can be used or are already being used to monitor protests, as well as collect data from video game communities such as Fortnite, and images from apps and websites for doing business. In addition, the posts mention social networks for black people, bodybuilders and fetishists. Of course, we are also talking about popular social networks (LinkedIn, Reddit, TikTok and Venmo).
"Discover the identities, connections, networks of partners, and available geolocation information in minutes," reads the description of one of the corporation's products.
"Our OSINT tools automate the collection of publicly available information, allowing organizations (government, corporate, and nonprofit) to make their own decisions about what the data means in the context of their investigations and what actions they should take," Shadow Dragon CEO Daniel Clemens said in a statement.
