Cooperation between law enforcement agencies and regulators sets an example of global counteraction to cyberattacks.

The British ICO regulator and the NCA intelligence agency have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening the cyber resilience of organizations across the country. The document defines how the two agencies will cooperate to improve the protection of businesses and government agencies from cybercriminals engaged in data theft and extortion.

The main objective of the agreement is to strengthen the exchange of relevant information in the field of cybersecurity and provide organizations with recommendations on effective data protection and response to cyber threats. As part of the cooperation, the ICO and NCA intend to direct companies to the relevant structures, such as the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC), so that they can quickly report cyberattacks.

The ICO stressed that the new memorandum strengthens the existing partnership with the NCA and contributes to improving security standards, while each agency retains its area of responsibility.

For its part, the NCA pointed out the importance of supporting and informing vulnerable organisations and stressed that the agreement is an important step towards creating a more secure cyber environment in the UK.

The agreement sets out the key obligations of the parties. In particular, ICOs and NCAs will help organizations engage with the NCA on cybersecurity issues and respond to incidents in a timely manner. At the same time, information transferred to the NCA on a confidential basis will not be transferred to the ICO without the consent of the relevant organization.

In addition, the parties agreed on the anonymous exchange of data on cyber incidents in order to protect the public interest and prevent serious cybercrimes. In the event that both organizations are involved in the investigation of the same incident, they will coordinate actions to minimize possible interference and not interfere with the affected companies in their remediation efforts.

The MoU also aims to promote cybersecurity training, provide uniform guidance, and improve security standards across all sectors. The collaboration between the ICO and the NCA should strengthen the UK's cyber defenses and make it less vulnerable to attackers.
