How can Instagram and Facebook harm your child?

Forty-one states and the District of Columbia have filed a lawsuit against Meta, claiming that the tech giant is harming children by introducing addictive features on Instagram and Facebook. This legal action was the most significant step taken by government agencies to monitor the impact of social media on children's mental health.

The lawsuits were the result of an extensive 2021 investigation into Meta contributing to mental health problems among young people. "Our bipartisan investigation has reached a serious conclusion: Meta is harming our children and teens by cultivating addiction for corporate profit," California Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a statement.

While the exact scope of the legal claims may vary, they are expected to portray a similar picture: the company lures children to its platforms using harmful and manipulative tactics.

Meta spokeswoman Lisa Crenshaw said the company is "disappointed that instead of working productively with companies across the industry to create clear standards for many of the apps that teens use, attorneys general have chosen this path."

The impact of Meta products on young people has been the subject of national attention since a report published in the Wall Street Journal in 2021 suggested that Instagram is making body problems worse for some teens.

Despite changes made by Meta to improve the security of its apps for children, critics at the state and federal levels have argued that the company is shirking its responsibility to protect its most vulnerable young users.

In recent years, officials have increasingly focused on how technology companies can exacerbate anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems among children and adolescents.
