MTS RED reports a 32% increase in cyber attacks on Russian healthcare.

In the first half of 2024, the number of critical cyber attacks on medical organizations increased by 32% compared to last year, according to MTS RED. Such incidents threaten to leak patient data, destroy infrastructure, and disrupt medical services.

The company said that not only the number of attacks has increased, but also their share in the total volume of information security incidents has increased. If in the first half of last year it was about 6%, then from the beginning of 2024-almost 19%. This trend is particularly noticeable given that the total number of attacks on medical organizations during this time increased by no more than 10%.

Earlier in 2024, MTS RED analysts noted an increase in hacker attacks on critical information infrastructure (CII) facilities in Russia. About 69% of all attacks were directed at organizations from areas related to CII. Among them, healthcare ranks second in the frequency of attacks, second only to industry.

The rate of cyber threats to medicine and healthcare continues to grow rapidly. MTS RED recorded 65% more attacks on healthcare organizations in the second quarter than in the first. In May and June, the number of attacks exceeded the monthly average at the beginning of the year by 2-2. 5 times.

MTS RED explained that healthcare has become a new target of hackers for several reasons. First, this is a fairly digitalized industry, where a large amount of personal and confidential data is processed, the leakage of which can cause a great response. In addition, healthcare is a branch of critical information infrastructure, and the continuity of its work is of great importance for the country's citizens. A successful attack on a medical organization will inevitably lead to significant consequences. Another important reason is the low level of industry maturity in terms of cybersecurity, so hackers do not need large financial or resource investments to carry out a serious attack.

The most common incidents are attempts to circumvent security tools, which account for 36% of all attacks. In second place are network attacks and the introduction of malware, each of these categories accounts for about a quarter of all attacks. Violations of information security policies and illegitimate actions of information system administrators were recorded in 5% of incidents.
