What is MMN?

MMN (Mothers Maiden Name) – Mother's maiden name. Not the most popular, but reliable verification method in the USA. MMN cannot be checked like SSN/DOB etc. There are no MMN databases, as with the above data (maybe there are, but they are far away in private). You may also have noticed that there are not many MMN checking services on the forum. My method of checking MMN is quite unique, it is not as accurate as checking through the database, but personally I have a 70-80% chance of successful checking. It is important to note that you need to get your hand in with this method, then the chance of checking will be higher.

To punch MMN we will need a subscription to the following sites. It is very easy to punch, no fraud, etc. The services are as follows:
Instantcheckmate.com
Ancestry.com
Legacy.com

MMN Punching Method

The method itself consists of searching for obituaries. Let's take an example, our KH is 40-45 years old, he is a man. We go to Instantcheckmate and search for him. We find by any of the proposed parameters, Zip, City, Country. I prefer to search by City, and then check by age and zip. We find his profile, and look at relatives. These are his close people (family). There will very often be brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, etc. We try to determine the CH's mother by name and surname. Also, if the KH is young, then often in Suggested Names there may be his name + mother's surname at birth, but this is rare.

When we find the mother of the KH, we open her page. Her page may already have her birth surname written on it, for example, if the mother of the CH is "Alicia Johnson", but in Suggested Names there is something like "Alicia Anderson", then most likely Anderson is her birth surname, that is, MMN CH, but we need to double-check, this may not be accurate. It may be that she remarried or this is her second marriage, and this is the surname of her husband, who is not related to our CH. This can be checked by looking at her Relatives. If there is no person there, the same age and address as her, then most likely this is her birth surname, if there is, double-check again and most likely this is the surname of her first/second husband, but not MMN CH.

Ancestry

Let's say we found the mother, her name is Alicia Johnson, but this is the last name of KH. We go to Ancestry, and there we enter her name into the search. It is important to indicate her year of birth, otherwise you will get a lot of other Alicias that are not related to KH or our "mother". We look at the year of birth on Instantcheckmate.

Ancestry is a data archive in US. Only public. There you can find a lot of records, from a migration card to a marriage or birth certificate.

We need to find our "mother" on this site, and search for her by records. Often, opening one record (in most cases) there will be "similar records", in which the type of record may differ, and we can find the mother of the KH, and it can be under the name at birth (surname). If we are lucky, then we very quickly find records of birth, marriage, birth of her child, etc. Or, in the best case, we find a record of her birth, there may be her name, and her father's, and her mother's, it is easy to calculate the MMN (the surname under which she was born or the surname of her father), this is the MMN of our CH.

Obituaries. Legacy, Findagrave.

In addition to Ancestrey, we can find MMN in an even easier way. Namely, an obituary. Let's say our KH is 50-55 years old, the probability that his mother or father has already died is quite high. We look for the KH's mother on Instantcheckmate, let's say she is dead (if she is not dead, then we look for her mother or husband). Let's say we find Alicia Johnson who died in 2015. We go to Google and type in Alicia Johnson obituary 2015. If the last name and first name are popular, then we can specify the request by state, zip, etc.

The best obituary sites are Legacy.com and Findagrave.com. They are often very detailed.
When we found CH's mother in an obituary, we looked at the following:
  • Father's surname
What was your last name when you were born?
If she had a brother, then we look at the brother’s surname, this is also her MMN, since men do not change their surname when they get married.
    Other posts about her.
  • When combining all of this, my chance of breaking through MMN reaches 70-80%. I will also note that it is worth taking CH 40+. In this case, there is a much higher chance of breaking through MMN.
