A scam campaign is actively developing on the Internet, aimed at those who want to illegally obtain a driver's license.

The company F. A. C. C. T. reported to Izvestia that it found 203 malicious websites offering to issue documents in circumvention of the law. However, instead of the coveted driver's licenses, people fall into the trap of providing fraudsters with their personal data and copies of passports. Stolen data can be used to steal money and other illegal activities.

An inside view: how scammers work

CERT-F. A. C. C. T. analysts have identified more than 200 resources that offer "legal" driving licenses for driving various vehicles. Moreover, scammers target residents of large cities such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Rostov-on-Don, Yaroslavl and Voronezh.

Each scam site is created for a specific city and positioned as a local company. Examples include MosPrava in Moscow and VolPrava in Volgograd. On these resources, scammers claim that they will be able to issue a driver's license without any extra hassle in 3 days, solving all the problems of drivers who are deprived of their rights using forged documents.

Deception mechanisms and their consequences

On the site, the victim is exposed to social engineering and marketing techniques. There are articles with titles like "Why only 5% of drivers get their license the first time" or "Why getting a license yourself through a driving school is a painful process". Next, the user is told how to easily and quickly buy a license with a guarantee. If a person agrees, they send their full name, phone number, photo, and a copy of their passport, but they don't get anything in return, and their data is used by fraudsters.

Roskomnadzor has recorded a significant increase in the activity of Internet scammers. Since the beginning of this year, more than 30 thousand fraudulent sites have been blocked, while for the whole of 2023 — 43.1 thousand. Most of these sites offer fake documents and financial services.

Trapped by the Law: punishments and risks

Scams with fake driver's licenses cause an ambiguous situation, as the victims themselves violate the law by trying to acquire fake documents. The Moshelovka service noted that fraudsters rely on victims ' fear of the law. Despite the fact that the victims do not bear any actual financial damage, the personal data provided is of significant value to fraudsters. The collected data can be used for taking out loans, registering on various platforms, and other fraudulent activities.

Blocking is not enough: what's next?

Experts emphasize that blocking fraudulent sites is only a temporary solution. Scammers easily create new resources to replace the blocked ones. The solution to the problem is seen in financial education of the population, so that people do not fall for the tricks of scammers and are more careful when interacting with dubious offers on the Internet.
