A new AI model weaves nets for scammers.
Virgin Media operator O2 has introduced a new assistant in the fight against fraudsters - artificial intelligence "Daisy", which imitates an elderly woman and is able to talk to scammers in real time. AI looks and talks like a grandmother who wastes criminals' time so that they can't harm real customers.
Daisy is trained with modern techniques and videos of popular cheater fighters. Daisy's main job is to distract scammers so that they waste time on useless conversations. AI uses multiple models to instantly understand and respond to speech. The answers sound so realistic that AI can delay attackers on the line for up to 40 minutes.
Daisy's artificial intelligence has already managed to amaze scammers, diverting their conversations and telling stories about knitting, family, or even providing made-up bank details. This helps to avoid real attacks on customers. The system uses a special language model, supplemented with personal character traits, and then the answers are translated into voice using a speech synthesis model.
Reality TV star Amy Hart, who herself became a victim of scammers and decided to help others avoid such situations, joined the project. Hart made a video with Daisy to show how scammers are trying to scam people.
The project became part of the Swerve the Scammers campaign from Virgin Media O2. This is a response to research showing that 71% of Britons would like to resist scammers, but 53% are not ready to spend their time on it. Therefore, now scambaiting is carried out by AI instead of people.
Virgin Media O2 has also suggested that the government set up a one-stop shop to combat fraud as the problem continues to grow. Almost 69% of Britons have already encountered attempts by scammers. Last year, the operator prevented more than £250 million worth of fraud, and also blocked 89 million suspicious texts thanks to customer complaints.
