32% of automated control system computers in Russia were subjected to cyber attacks in the first half of 2023.

In the first half of 2023, malicious objects were blocked on 32% of automated control system computers in Russia, according to a recent Kaspersky ICS CERT report.

Russia, along with the Middle East, was among the regions where the largest share of automated control system computers was recorded, on which malicious scripts and phishing pages were blocked.

The main sources of threats to Russian industrial facilities remain the Internet, email, and removable media.

According to the report, for the first 6 months of 2023, e-mail for the first time surpassed removable media as the main source of threats to automated control systems in Russia. The share of automated control system computers that tried to attack via email clients is growing starting from the second half of 2021. Interestingly, the dynamics of threats from email and removable media are moving in opposite directions: the growth of one is accompanied by a decrease in the other.

As for the types of cyber threats, from January to June 2023, the share of computers with blocked malicious documents and web miners increased in Russia. Malicious documents are sent by hackers in phishing emails for the primary infection of computers.

The top three industries in Russia, where the largest share of attacked automated control systems is recorded, include engineering and automated control system integration (35.8%), building automation (34.3%), and energy (32.6%). At the same time, the growth in the share of attacked computers is observed only in the manufacturing industry.
