You know how to determine whether a person is lying to you or is he telling the truth? Do you know the sure signs of a lie? Is it easy to mislead you?

Let's try to figure it out using the example of an interview with Vladimir Pozner, which he gave to Yuri Dudyu. In one of the questions, Yuri asks about an apology for the clause "State fool / State Duma". But in reality it was an apology for another reservation, and therefore Yuri asks:

"Was that an intentional slip of the tongue?"

To which Vladimir Pozner replies with a smile:

"I do not remember."

Watch the video carefully and try to answer the question whether Vladimir Pozner lied about not remembering that the reservation was made on purpose. Give your arguments.

Let's figure it out

To answer whether a person is lying or not, you need to know several features of the process of lying. When people cheat, they think in a special way, experience different emotions specific to lying, and also try to hide their deception. Basically, when a person is lying, they are going through three different processes. It is these processes that help profilers detect lies, forming 3 main approaches to detecting deception:
  1. Emotional - when a person lies, he can experience different emotions, from the fear of being caught to the emotional uplift from the deception.
  2. Cognitive - The cheater is under a greater cognitive load in order to control his readings and not betray his cheating.
  3. Strong - willed - control over behavior. The deceiver is trying to sell us his lies.
The behavior of a person who lies is different from his normal, usual behavior. Therefore, it is much easier to determine that a person is lying if he is close or familiar. Determining whether a stranger or an unfamiliar person is lying is much more difficult.

In general, when you are trying to "read" a person's behavior, and especially, trying to identify deception, we recommend that you always follow two basic rules:

Rule 1: It is important to consider the BLP (baseline of conduct) and the context of the event. For example, a person may scratch their nose if they have a runny nose or if their nose just itches. He may blush, as it is hot in the room or he has such a feature by nature. And his eyes are running around, because he forgot whether he turned off the iron.

Rule 2: it is better to be guided by several signs. Most people don't know how to lie. Therefore, even the grossest signs are enough to understand that a person is insincere. But there are those who have achieved a certain skill in this matter, their manifestations are hidden, although absolutely everything cannot be hidden here. In any case, it is always necessary to rely not only on specific manifestations, but on their complex, and it is imperative to take into account the context (see rule 1).

Signs that Pozner lied:
  1. A smile or even pleasure (an emotional approach is the joy of being deceived).
  2. Pause before answering (cognitive approach - pause to think over the answer).
  3. A close look at the interlocutor after the answer (a strong-willed approach - the desire to analyze the interlocutor's reaction).
In addition, there are several more subtle details, micro-expressions and gestures that you can learn about in our program "Profiling", on the basis of which we have prepared this material: learn more about profiling.
