Did the man realize the consequences when filling his pockets with money?

The US Department of Justice has arrested and charged an IT contractor with espionage for transferring top secret information from the US State Department to another country.

Abraham Teklou Lemma, a foreign national with US citizenship, worked as an evening support specialist assigned to the US State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research.

The man is charged with copying a large amount of classified information, including documents, photos and satellite images, and transmitting it to a foreign country through encrypted messages.

According to the criminal complaint, between December 2022 and August 2023, Lemma copied information from at least 85 intelligence reports. During the same period, he also gained access to an additional 48 intelligence reports without the need for knowledge of classified information.

The information was transmitted to an unknown person from an unspecified country. In one of the conversations, Lemma sent an image and recommended that the recipient analyze it. In response, his interlocutor discussed the significant progress that will be made in the coming days thanks to this information.

Lemma has had access to various classified data since 2020. According to the prosecution, he repeatedly visited the country with which he is connected, and managed to unload more than 100 documents with classified information from the department.

Since this June, the man has reportedly copied classified information into Microsoft Word documents. And then these files were downloaded from the State Department's secure system and recorded on CDs, which could then be secretly removed from the department's territory.
In addition, Lemma was repeatedly seen making obscure notes on a piece of paper, right on his desk, which also aroused the suspicion of others.

The Justice Department alleges that the defendant was paid more than $100,000 from representatives of an unnamed country in exchange for the information described above.

According to court documents, in addition to his work at the State Department, Lemma also served as a contract management analyst at the Justice Department, from where he could also, hypothetically, steal confidential information.
