The investigation continues, but it is already known that the election commission is not guilty.

As it became known, as a result of hacking the servers of DataNet Systems, a hosting company for the District of Columbia election Commission, attackers could gain access to the personal data of all registered voters in Washington.

The District of Columbia Board of Elections (DCBOE) has notified all citizens whose data may have been compromised.

"DCBOE will contact all registered voters. In addition, DCBOE will work with Mandiant, a cybersecurity consulting firm, to determine and map out an action plan." - the organization said in a statement on October 20.

The first signs of hacking were discovered on October 5. RansomVC, the group that claimed responsibility for hacking Washington's voter database, claims on its darknet site that it managed to obtain more than 600,000 records. According to them, the stolen database contains names, IDs, partial social security numbers, driver's license numbers, dates of birth and contact details of residents of Colombia.

Hackers put the database up for sale, but the price has not yet been announced. Initially, on October 3, the stolen files appeared on the hacker forums BreachForums and Sinister.ly on behalf of the pwncoder user, but those ads were subsequently removed.

Later it turned out that the attackers gained access to confidential information through vulnerabilities in the system of the hosting provider DataNet Systems, and not by directly hacking the servers of the election commission.

The leak raised serious concerns about possible manipulation and fraud in the voting process.

The incident is being investigated by the FBI in conjunction with the US Department of Homeland Security. Experts analyze the chronology of the attack, study the actions of intruders, and identify technical bugs that were used for unauthorized access. A criminal case has already been opened on the incident.

Citizens are advised to update passwords from their personal accounts to minimize risks in case their data really ended up in the hands of intruders.

The attack on the Washington electoral system may have political motives and be part of a targeted campaign to destabilize the situation in the run-up to regional elections. However, experts still do not make unambiguous conclusions.
