Employees of the UBK Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the city of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region detained two residents of the Moscow region. They are suspected of remote fraud under the guise of investing in the purchase of cryptocurrency.
According to preliminary data, since January 2022, attackers have been actively advertising the "author's" course for crypto investors on the Internet, where they talked about allegedly successful financial transactions and super-profits. In fact, the young people did not have any special knowledge in this area, and the huge number of subscribers and positive reviews was the result of using Internet bots.
Clients money invested in the business project was stolen, and all operations with electronic currencies were actually carried out on exchange simulators. These programs imitated the work of the largest crypto exchanges and represented their demos. They displayed information that the invested funds allegedly bring income," said Irina Volk, an official representative of the Russian Interior Ministry.
During searches conducted at the place of residence of the detainees, police officers with the support of Rosgvardiya officers seized 18 bank cards, several SIM cards and smartphones.
"The investigator of the SU of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Central district of St. Petersburg opened a criminal case on the grounds of a crime under part 2 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The defendants were given a preventive measure in the form of remand in custody.
At present, the possible involvement of the detainees in the commission of about 40 crimes against residents of several regions of Russia has been established," Irina Volk said.
