How to keep your plastic card for a long time? What is worth knowing to ensure that the card lasts a long time? Methods of protecting a plastic card.

A plastic card is an item that is constantly used. Discount cards, bank keys, magnetic keys, parking cards ... Cards have become a ubiquitous part of our everyday life, and it’s hard to imagine everyday life without using them. But most people only know in general terms how to properly use and store cards. The card may become demagnetized, lost, erased, or even crack. We'll tell you how to avoid this and leave your card in its original quality.

A plastic card consists directly of a plastic rectangle and one or more built-in storage media (magnetic tape, chip, microcircuit). The precautions for cards with different storage media are similar. In order for the card to last a long time, you should follow the following measures.

Do not keep the card near metallic objects that emit radio waves or magnetized objects . Away from cell phones, microwaves, keys, routers, tablets, office equipment, and of course, magnets. In order for the card to begin to demagnetize, you need quite close and long contact with these objects (except magnets). Nothing bad will happen if your card was in the same pocket with your phone for less than an hour or lay on the printer in the office. But still, it is better to avoid such proximity of katas.

Another “enemy” of the card is static electricity. Even such a small charge can damage or destroy data on a plastic card. Static electricity is best accumulated by ordinary household dust.

In addition, dust microparticles scratch the images on the card, making it unrecognizable over time. Plastic does not hold paint well because it has almost zero absorption. (except thermal printing methods). The images have to be covered with film or varnish, the scratches on which are also very noticeable. Therefore, the card must be kept clean at all times.

For cards with a magnetic stripe there is one feature. Magnetic tape has a limited lifespan. This is due both to the fact that the tape wears off on the reader over time, and to the fact that the information recorded on the tape has a limited number of reading cycles. The service life of such a card is usually from one to two years. There is no need to store such cards for longer than this period.

What more can be said about precautions? The fact that the card can be bent no more than 30 degrees, otherwise you can break the internal chip or damage the tape. The card should not be left in cold temperatures of more than minus 20 degrees; the plastic will crack in the cold. Do not heat more than +50 degrees. You cannot throw the card into water, acid, gasoline, solvent, alkali - it deteriorates surprisingly quickly there.

Separately and very important - you cannot carry a card in your back pocket ! All of the above risks can occur with a card located in this place. Many things get spoiled in the vicinity of the butt.

So, how can you protect your card from all these dangers? To date, nothing better than a protective case has been invented. Cases can combine several types of card protection. They can even shield it from illegal reading. The card can be used without removing it from the case. The design of the card case can complement the design of the card.
