External surveillance
Detection of surveillance is carried out by studying the surrounding environment, in particular - people. The emphasis should be on repeated encounters with the same characters while moving around the city. The easiest way to detect surveillance is when moving on public transport in a chaotic manner. If your paranoia is not unfounded, it is worth developing a habit of carefully examining the surrounding area and people so that the brain, like a computer, records anything suspicious. These can be characters like spies from movies (although unlikely) or ordinary idiots who can get caught even at a glance. Surveillance can be carried out at home, work, educational institution, friends' apartment and other places that can be key.
Professional observers can even sit under the entrance for days, waiting for the right moment. Detection of external surveillance can be soft and rough. Rough detection includes such actions as talking to suspicious people, tying shoelaces (that is, examining the surroundings if necessary), looking around. It is quite easy to detect people who are following you. If these are ordinary guys from the street, they will be given away by stiffness in movements, excitement, abrupt change of route, accelerated step when detected, the desire to not look into the eyes, constantly squeezing the phone in their hands, etc. Also, such a trifle as the discovery of identical clothes or shoes on the lower part of the body will help. This can be socks, tights, shoes. Many overlook this, so they are easily caught, thinking that you are another inattentive idiot. Chasing a bus with a car and then violating traffic rules should also prompt the idea of surveillance. Before you can be 100% sure that you are being spied on, you need to learn two rules:
Soft Surveillance Detection
Detecting surveillance is a labor-intensive and creative process. Let's consider a situation with a walk. In this situation, my dear friend, you should act carefully and continue to pretend to be a fool who allegedly does not suspect anything. Every day you should have one route, like all normal people. It can be "home - work - cafeteria - home" or "home - work - lover - home - cafe". Your route is important only for the pursuers, who must know everything about you (if they are professionals). A change of route, a non-stereotypical appearance will confuse enemies and force them to act more subtly. To avoid this, make your daily route more varied and unique. The fewer stereotypes in behavior, the more scope for action. To confirm your guesses and, at the same time, comprehensive surveillance of your person, you should develop several routes for each day. A long route will allow you to determine the conduct of surveillance. It is best to make the road mixed - half the way on foot, the other half - by public transport / bicycle / taxi / etc. The best option would be to use public transport. Frequent transfers and mixing in the crowd will greatly scare surveillance and make them move. And this means that you will have a better chance of identifying who in the crowd or passers-by is not breathing evenly towards you. Large cities with a subway are better suited for effectively identifying surveillance and hiding from it. If you have watched cool movies about cops, the FBI and other special services, then you probably saw how surveillance is carried out by two groups - on foot and on transport. Well, in life it is exactly the same. Two groups communicate with each other, coordinating movement, which makes it easier to identify the pursuer by the presence of a headset in the ear or constant conversation on the phone with a stone face. Having two surveillance groups and the subway, you can try to throw them off your tail. To do this, you should choose those metro lines that go through the city center, underground, under water. Using a GPS application on your smartphone to track traffic, you can know in advance where a traffic jam has formed and where a friend in a car will not be able to go. Walking along a one-way street will also allow you to effectively get rid of a "tail" on transport. While they are looking for a way, you have a chance to break away. Another effective technique for identifying surveillance. Walking along the street, cross the road to the opposite side. Looking around, supposedly according to traffic rules, you will be able to identify a car with surveillance. Everything must be done naturally and casually. You can also glance around in another way. Call your friend and ask what street the electronics store or other junk is on. Holding the phone to your ear, you look around, study the area, people, cars. Large glass display cases are great for inspection,near which you can stop and "examine" the goods.Just don't stand by a display case with women's clothing, underwear, children's toys and other goods that are not associated with you in any way. This will arouse unnecessary suspicion. After examining the store window, you can use it to detect surveillance and further get rid of the tail. The larger the store, the better. Chaotic movement along the perimeter will allow the surveillance group to be noticed, which will allow them to emerge from the crowd. Living in big cities is quite advantageous in terms of detecting surveillance. You can go into an alley where there is a cafe, bar, hipster store or other establishment, thereby stirring up the surveillance group. A person walking behind you at an accelerated pace clearly hints at problems. Revealing a surveillance group in public transport is a different matter. When entering a tram, trolleybus, bus, always strive for the back of the transport, from where a gorgeous view of the entire cabin and people opens up. From the window, cars moving along the same route will also be clearly visible. Which of them is your "fan" will help determine attentiveness. Of course, the observer can choose such a strategy himself, so you should be the first. When in public transport, you should carefully assess the situation and the crowd of people. Usually, pursuers avoid any visual contact with the target. This can be used to your advantage.
Pay attention to who surrounds you
Start paying attention to the people who pass you or overtake you in the pedestrian flow. You will be pleasantly surprised to see that most people are walking on the sidewalks and chatting enthusiastically on their mobile phones. None of them pay any attention to the world around them or to you, they just walk with their heads down and stare blankly at the asphalt.
Keep your head up and pay attention not only to the people walking, but also to the cars you meet along the way. You should be familiar with the world around you and what the crowd of people on the street looks like, and also notice the mass flow of cars. Without knowing what the surrounding world actually looks like, you will not be able to figure out among it the person who is watching you.
Don't get into the habit of looking over your shoulder
Remember that all actions must be performed discreetly and naturally. If you behave suspiciously, then the one who is watching you may understand that you suspect him and have noticed surveillance, and then the secret observer may change tactics. For example, special agents for external surveillance know that if you turn over your shoulder every three steps, then most likely they will think that the object has suspected something, has started to behave suspiciously, which can only mean one thing - you felt surveillance. Most likely, after such behavior on your part, special agents will stop surveillance in order to resume it later.
If you feel like you are being watched, start observing
Pay attention to a car in your yard that you have never seen before. Write down the license plate number in your phone. If you are driving in a stream of cars, pay attention to cars that repeat your actions on the road. For example, those cars that change lanes behind you several times.
Usually, if someone is driving behind you, they will usually drive past you a few times, overtaking your car, but then, having slowed down, they will get back into your lane. Pay attention to such cars, because in everyday life you will rarely meet a car that, having overtaken you, slowed down, and got back into your lane. Also pay attention to the cars that you have already noticed, whether they follow you when approaching the queue that has formed to turn at the intersection
Also, if you are walking and notice that you are really being followed, ie an inconspicuous pedestrian is following you unnoticed, who may overtake you in the flow of people on the sidewalk, and may subsequently deliberately lag behind in order to continue the surveillance, then the main thing is not to panic and act as if nothing had happened, continue your movement along the planned route. In addition, the observer can often even cross to the other side of the street in order to follow you completely unnoticed for part of the way. But, as a rule, such a person will sooner or later cross over to your side again in order to continue the path behind you.
During surveillance, many professionals use the method of changing outerwear. They need this so that the target does not identify the surveillance. But still, you have a chance to identify even professionals. Start remembering the shoes of those who seem suspicious to you. The fact is that it is not difficult to change coats and hats. But with shoes, there is usually a problem. After all, as a rule, there is simply not enough time for this, since the time spent on changing shoes can lead to the loss of the target from sight. Therefore, even professionals usually do not change shoes during surveillance.
Check if there is surveillance by changing the pace of movement
For example, slow down. If you are driving, slow down by half. If you are walking, slow down your walking speed. Usually, doing this will create huge difficulties for those who are watching you, since your slowdown can give you the opportunity to detect surveillance and the surveillance agent. If you are driving, then after slowing down, move to the right lane and while continuing to move, try to watch other cars.
Usually, this method is very helpful in identifying unprofessional surveillance. Namely, if, having slowed down, you actually saw the car that is following you, then most likely you are not being followed by special services or police officers.
You should do similar actions when you are walking, you should also slow down or stop for a while, take your mobile phone out of your pocket to pretend that you are looking for something in it, as if you are looking only at the phone, but your eyes should look around, observing the situation. Pay attention to who is passing by at the moment when you stopped or are moving very slowly. Remember all the people who passed by you. Then pay attention to the person who passed by you, but then again appeared behind you, as you again accelerated.
On the Internet you can find and read advice that supposedly helps to detect professional surveillance, where it is said that you just need to speed up (increase the speed of movement or walking speed).
In fact, this method will not help you figure out professional surveillance, since the secret services will not speed up after you (especially if you are moving in a straight line), they, as a rule, speed up the movement after the object only if there is a risk that the observed object will disappear from their sight. Thus, by increasing the speed of movement, you have a chance to figure out only an amateur amateur.
Counter-surveillance
Counter-surveillance is an effective strategy for finding and detecting surveillance. The idea behind the strategy is to set up checkpoints and station observers at them. The best posts are the entrances to neighboring houses, cafes, and cars. You can hide in these places. Usually, observers take up their posts half an hour before the agreed appearance of the object in the case of stereotypical behavior and a well-established route. Even if you leave the point, the observer will remain there for about an hour. During counter-surveillance, all discrepancies in behavior and movement should be recorded. This is the key point. If you, my dear friend, are a big shot, a drug lord, or some other entrepreneur, you should pay attention to the presence of provisions, extra sets of clothes, and other things in the cars that would indicate long-term surveillance. While in the building, you can inspect the neighboring building and its open windows. Perhaps photo/or video filming is underway.
How to escape surveillance
Here are some tips on what is best to use to avoid surveillance:
Signs of mobile phone tapping
Gaining access to a cell phone to listen in on it is actually not that difficult. However, there are ways to prevent invasion of your privacy.
Each of us has a mobile phone. When was the last time you left home without a mobile phone? It was probably an accident. It is no secret that we use phones very often, we are practically dependent on them and their capabilities.
We're not trying to scare you, but do you know how easy it is to access them from the outside? If someone wants to listen to your conversations, read your SMS messages, and track you via GPS, they can do it.
There are many reasons why a person might want to eavesdrop on someone else's phone conversation. It could be a nosy boss, a jealous spouse, a burglar, or a phone hooligan.
Tracking a phone without the owner's permission is illegal, but it happens. It doesn't necessarily happen to you, but if you suspect someone is reading your text messages or listening to your conversations, here are some helpful tips on how to spot the bad guy.
Battery temperature
One of the likely indicators of wiretapping is the battery. Feel your phone when you are not using it – if it is warm or even hot, it means that it is still in use. Keep in mind that heat is primarily due to excessive use. The battery can only be hot if the phone has been used for some time.
The phone runs out of battery very quickly
Charging your mobile phone more often than usual – get another sign of potential danger. If you have not used the gadget more than usual, it is quite possible that your phone is used by someone without your knowledge. When a mobile phone is tapped, it loses battery power much faster. A tapped mobile phone constantly records conversations in the room, even if it looks like it is lying idle.
Several signs of mobile phone tapping
You can use the BatteryLife LX or Battery LED apps for iPhone to monitor your battery drain rate.
Note: Mobile phones tend to lose maximum battery capacity over time. If your phone is more than a year old, the battery capacity will steadily decrease depending on how much you use it.
Delay on shutdown
When you turn off your phone and notice a long delay, the backlight stays on for a long time, or the phone simply refuses to turn off, you may be hooked. Always look for unusual behavior from your phone. Although, the problems described may be caused by hardware or software glitches in the phone.
Strange activity
When your phone is working, does it ever suddenly turn on the backlight, install apps on its own, or turn off on its own? Strange behavior may indicate that someone is remotely controlling the device. By the way, this may also happen due to interference in data transmission.
Background noise
When you talk, a tapped phone can create interference. Things like echoes, electrical shocks, clicks – these sounds can be caused by the environment, interference in the connection… or someone listening to you. If you hear a pulsating noise from your phone when you are not using it, this can be a serious problem.
Interference
If you use your phone in close proximity to other electronic devices (like a TV) and it interference creates on them, then this may be a consequence of the presence of foreign devices in the mobile phone case. In most cases, interference is normal, but if it happens at times when you are not using the phone, then it may well mean that you are “under surveillance”.
Become a disinformer
If you suspect that your phone conversation is being tapped or recorded by someone you know, you can try to mislead the spy to confirm this suspicion.
Tell someone you trust your "secret" personal information over the phone. If you find out later that strangers have found out, then the answer may be "yes".
Get help
If you have reason to believe that your mobile phone is being tapped, seek help. The police are also an option, as they have equipment to check the phone, but you must be fully aware that they may also be involved in this, or you will simply be sent away with such a request.
Also, I want to note that professionals will not act alone, and most likely, while you are riding in public transport, there will be a change of 2-3, or even more spies. In this case, just pay attention to their behavior, but remember that you need to do this discreetly!

- Theoretical degree of surveillance. Paranoia out of the blue is unhealthy and life-threatening. Therefore, you should try to soberly analyze the situation and understand what the probability is that you are being followed. If you stole gum from Auchan and then started to be paranoid, this is just a reason to laugh. But if things are much more serious, and certain people need you... In general, we draw the right conclusions;
- Testing the hypothesis. Analyze the behavior of people who are supposedly following you and other suspicious changes in life. Having collected enough information, you can draw conclusions and make an “escape” plan.

Here are some tips on what is best to use to avoid surveillance:
- Chaotic movement in crowded places will confuse the pursuer and allow you to escape unnoticed;
- Back doors, alleys, narrow courtyards and similar structures will allow you to squeeze through quickly and unnoticed;
- Public transport with constant transfers;
- Transfers to another metro line;
- Walking tour through the city through “labyrinths”;
- Unexpected acceleration when turning corners;
- Exiting public transport abruptly before it departs;
- Unexpected driving on a yellow or red light, driving under a lowering barrier;
- Creating the illusion of movement along a stereotypical route with a sharp departure from it;
- Change in appearance during a short stay in a store, cafe, or other public places;
- Inciting aggression by manipulating others to distract attention
- Go to any public place where there are a lot of people.
- Don't panic
- Change your behavior to confuse the person who is watching you
- Change your actions regularly
