HDMI and artificial intelligence are all it takes for hackers to steal your sensitive data. At least that's what a report from experts at the University of the Republic in Uruguay suggests.

The study (PDF) posted on arXiv claims that the researchers managed to steal the test data by scanning electromagnetic radiation. The experiment used the following setup:
  • antenna;
  • High-pass filters and amplifier;
  • SDR;
  • a computer acting as an attacker running the GNU Radio flowchart.

As for the hardware, experts list an Intel Core i7-10700F processor, 64 GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 GPU with 24 GB of memory.

Using this kit, specialists captured electromagnetic radiation from an HDMI cable connected to a target computer, and used artificial intelligence to analyze and decipher the received data.

While entering passwords on the target device, the researchers tried to intercept them and decrypt them using AI. The report also includes examples of combinations obtained using gr-tempest (top), Pure Model (center), and the original image (bottom).

The experts provided a table of the performance of the models used, which was assessed on both artificial and real photos. The best indicators are highlighted in bold.
