A large-scale police operation ended with the seizure of suspicious equipment and money.
Singapore police have arrested six people on suspicion of involvement in illegal cyber activities. Among the detainees are five Chinese citizens and one resident of Singapore. The special operation took place on September 9, 2024 with the participation of about 160 law enforcement officers, who simultaneously conducted raids on several addresses.
The suspects, aged between 32 and 42, may be linked to a global cybercriminal group. During the searches, electronic devices and large sums of money were seized from them. Among those arrested is a 42-year-old Chinese man who was found in possession of a laptop with access to web servers used by hacker groups.
Other detainees were also found to have equipment that could be used for cyberattacks. For example, three Chinese citizens were seized laptops with personal data of foreign Internet providers and specialized malware management software, such as PlugX, widely used in cyberattacks.
In total, the police seized seven laptops, 11 mobile phones and more than 78 thousand Singapore dollars, as well as cryptocurrency worth about 850 thousand US dollars.
One of the suspects, a 38-year-old Chinese national, was detained for attempting to buy personal information allegedly obtained illegally. Meanwhile, the 34-year-old Singaporean is suspected of helping foreign hackers in their criminal activities.
All six arrested are charged with violating the Computer Misuse Act of 1993. Among the charges are unauthorized access to computer systems and possession of malware.
A spokesman for the Singapore police said the arrested group was likely conducting its cyberattacks globally from Singapore. The authorities stressed that they would not tolerate the use of the country to carry out cybercrimes.
This operation underscores the seriousness of cyber threats in today's world and demonstrates the authorities' determination to combat criminals who use technology to cause harm. Data protection and abuse prevention are becoming an increasingly clear priority, and international cooperation and rapid response from law enforcement agencies are key to ensuring security.
