The Genesis Market administration managed to escape the FBI in an unusual way and circumvent US sanctions.

Despite the active actions of the FBI aimed at eliminating and confiscating key domains and infrastructure of the Genesis Market in April 2023 , the successful sale of the platform apparently took place. The criminal group behind Genesis Market has announced that the platform has been sold to an unknown buyer.

A few months ago, on April 4, during an international law enforcement operation led by the FBI, one of the most significant trading platforms among cybercriminals, Genesis Market, was seized. All 3 domains of the site were included in the US Treasury's sanctions list, which listed Genesis Market as being based in Russia, along with the.onion site of Genesis Market.

In the first few days after the FBI raid, one of the Genesis Market operators tried to allay user concerns, claiming that the FBI confiscated only open web domains, and the darknet version of the market is still anonymous and secure. However, criminals are still hesitant to use the darknet version of the site due to concerns that it is still controlled by the FBI, and everything that is happening is just a big bluff.

At the end of June, the Genesis Market was presented for sale on a hacker forum, along with the source code and database. The operators attempt to sell the platform has caused skepticism in the cybersecurity community. Experts suggested that this announcement could be part of an FBI special operation.

Announcement of the sale of the platform

Information about the sale of Genesis Market became known when an account called GenesisStore, previously associated with the platform administration, published a corresponding announcement on the Exploit forum.

The account message stated that the buyer had been found and the deposit had already been made. The transfer of the platform to the new owner is scheduled for next month. It is worth noting that the deal does not include existing user accounts.

Message about the sale on the forum

Despite its tainted reputation, the sale of Genesis Market has raised eyebrows in the cybersecurity community. Some experts suggest that the platform operators could have independently organized the sale in order to rebrand and break ties with the authorized object. There were doubts about the reality of the sale, given the deterioration of the platform's position and the possible legal consequences that potential buyers may expect.

Genesis Market, which functioned as a one-stop shop for criminals, sold both stolen credentials and tools to use that data, and has been linked to millions of cyber-incidents with funds stolen around the world-from fraud to ransomware attacks. Law enforcement agencies believe that Genesis Market administrators have earned more than $8.7 million since the site was founded in 2018.

The operation to liquidate Genesis Market and identify administrators is called Cookie Monster Operation. As part of the operation, 119 arrests, 208 searches and interrogations were carried out in 15 different countries. According to officials, Operation Cookie Monster is "the largest operation to identify sellers and buyers of stolen credentials that law enforcement agencies have ever conducted.
