A preliminary investigation revealed long and careful planning on the part of the hackers.

Kyivstar Telecommunications company, which serves almost the entire territory of Ukraine, recently experienced a serious security breach that affected the functioning of the company's systems and the availability of communication services for 24 million subscribers within a few days.

It all started on December 12. In addition to disruptions in mobile communications and the Internet, the company's information infrastructure was also seriously damaged, including emergency public notification systems.

The head of the cyber division of the country's Security Service said that the attack had "catastrophic" consequences and almost completely destroyed Kyivstar, affecting thousands of the company's servers. However, by December 20, all the company's services were fully restored across the country.

During the investigation, it turned out that the digital attack had been planned for a long time, and the first attempts were made back in March 2023.

In addition to the above-mentioned consequences, the attack also allowed hackers to steal personal data of subscribers, determine the location of their phones, intercept SMS messages, and even hack Telegram accounts.

A representative of Kyivstar said that necessary precautions were taken to prevent such attacks in the future. It was also noted that so far there is no evidence of disclosure of personal data of subscribers of the company, but such a risk cannot be excluded.
