25 years ago, two students decided to change the Internet.
Google, the world's most popular search engine, celebrates its 25th anniversary on Monday. Google was created as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were graduate students at Stanford University in the late 1990s.
Working in their dorms, Page and Brin developed a new search engine algorithm that ranked websites based on the number of other sites linking to them. This algorithm was called PageRank and turned out to be much more efficient than existing algorithms. Thanks to this, Google quickly became the most popular search engine on the Internet.
Last month, Google's market share was about 92%. Its closest competitor, Bing, had about 3% of the market, while Yahoo had just over 1%.
The name Google comes from the mathematical term "googol", which stands for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. This choice reflects the founders ' intention to organize a huge amount of information.
Over the years, the Google search engine has become an integral part of our daily lives, shaping the ways we search, communicate, and interact with information on the web.
In 2006, the Oxford Dictionary included the word "google" as a verb meaning to search for information on the Internet, regardless of the search engine used. In the same year, the Google Trends platform was launched, which provides an opportunity to see the trends of search queries in the world. Every year, Google publishes its "Year in Search" report, reflecting the most relevant events, personalities, and trends.
