The company has unveiled a secret version of Gemini for the U.S. military and intelligence.
Google plans to release a special version of Gemini for use in classified conditions. The company announced this at the Public Sector Summit in Washington. Such a product aroused considerable interest among representatives of the American military and intelligence sector.
During closed meetings with representatives of military and intelligence agencies, demonstrations of the capabilities of a specialized version of Gemini caused a positive response. The names of specific organizations participating in the discussions are not disclosed.
The development of a version of Gemini for classified systems coincides with efforts by other tech companies seeking to bring AI to sensitive government networks. Such tools were rarely used in classified work because they required an internet connection and were based on data collected from consumer sources.
At the summit, Google also presented examples of using Gemini in government agencies. In the near future, the company plans to introduce chatbots and translation services. The main goal of the new tools is to reduce the administrative burden on employees of state institutions and increase their productivity.
The corporation stressed that Google's solutions meet security requirements for working in more sensitive environments, including Impact 4 and Impact 5 levels designed for defense tasks. Data security remains a priority when working with such a system: only those organizations that use the Gemini model will have access to information, while the data will not be publicly available or transferred to Google.
In addition to the new model, organizations will be able to use Vertex AI, an AI solution development platform that can tailor Gemini to the specific needs of staff. This includes configuring settings that affect how the model behaves when processing different types of data in workflows.
Adoption of AI in the public sector has been slow due to the complex structure of incentives and the need for time to assess the practical benefits of the technology. In October 2023, a decree was signed that involves intensifying the strategy for the introduction of AI. As part of the document, agencies are recommended to appoint those responsible for the implementation of AI technologies in order to speed up their adaptation.
