Kaspersky analysts have found a twofold increase in the number of infected IoT devices in Russia.

Cybercriminals are increasingly using botnets - networks of infected devices that allow for massive attacks, such as DDoS. A study conducted by Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence experts showed that the cost of renting or buying such networks on the black market starts from $ 99, which makes them accessible to a wide range of attackers.

Botnets are formed from devices infected with malware and allow you to automate attacks on a large scale. For example, the Mirai botnet scans the Internet for vulnerable IoT devices that use standard passwords, captures them and includes them in its network.

Recently, the number of such vulnerable devices in Russia has doubled. In the first half of 2024, Kaspersky Lab analysts recorded a significant increase in the number of infected IoT gadgets, which can include both simple home devices and complex industrial systems.

In the shadow market, botnets are available for both buying and renting. Their price varies depending on the quality and functionality — from 99 to 10 thousand US dollars for purchase and from 30 to 4 800 dollars for rent per month. These networks can be configured for specific tasks and differ in infection methods, the type of software used, and how to bypass security systems.

Botnets with leaked source code are particularly dangerous. They are available at a minimal price or even for free, but their effectiveness is reduced due to the ease of detection by modern security systems. However, such botnets are still widely used in cyber attacks.

In addition, there are offers for creating custom botnets on black markets. The cost of such services starts from 3 thousand US dollars, and such transactions are often concluded privately. Performers are chosen based on their reputation, which is confirmed by ratings on shadow forums.

Botnets are used not only for conducting attacks. With their help, attackers organize illegal mining of cryptocurrencies or distribute ransomware. The ransom amount required for decrypting data stolen using such programs can reach up to 2 million US dollars.

According to Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence analysts, despite the relative availability of botnets, they remain only one of many tools in the arsenal of cybercriminals. However, their popularity continues to grow, which poses significant threats to the security of both individuals and organizations.
