How a random mistake led to chaos throughout the country.

Yesterday, August 15, there was a massive disruption in the banking system in Ireland, causing chaos and long queues at ATMs.

According to sources, due to a technical error, Bank of Ireland customers were able to withdraw up to 1,000 euros from accounts with a zero balance. Pictures quickly surfaced on social media of huge queues at ATMs in cities like Dublin, Limerick and Duncaulk.

To prevent theft, law enforcement agencies were forced to guard some offices of the Bank of Ireland, and the bank itself warned that all illegal withdrawals would be recorded and subsequently debited from customer accounts, even if this would lead to a loss.

“Despite the fact that customers are temporarily unable to check the balance, they should not withdraw funds if this leads to an overdraft,” the bank’s representatives were quoted as saying by the media.

The mobile banking app reportedly experienced a similar issue, with the app allowing up to €500 to be transferred to a Revolut bank account from any Bank of Ireland accounts, even if they had no funds.

The police reminded citizens of their personal responsibility for banking transactions, while the specialists of the Bank of Ireland had to temporarily disable their online services and mobile application to fix the problem.

Today, the correct operation of all systems has been restored, and satisfied with the fact that they deceived fate, the clients lost their pot of gold in the blink of an eye.
