A service where you can purchase someone else's face or documents for verification.

The network has a new tool for fraudsters that allows you to bypass identity verification systems on cryptocurrency exchanges and other online services. The underground service Fotodropy Store, which offers sets of photos and videos of real people for use in fraudulent schemes, was accidentally discovered by journalists.

Launched in 2021, the service offers hundreds of sets of images of people of different ages, genders, and nationalities. For a relatively small amount in cryptocurrency (about $ 30), you can purchase a set of 80 photos and 4 videos of one person.

In the video, people perform the standard actions required for verification: blink, turn their heads, and look in different directions. In the photos, they hold blank sheets of paper in various formats, empty laptops or smartphones with a white screen. This allows scammers to add any information using Photoshop.

Researchers purchased one of these kits to study its contents. According to the file metadata, the photos and videos were taken on February 8 on an iPhone XR. The set includes images of a man holding white cards and sheets of paper of various sizes: from the size of a driver's license to a passport and an A4 sheet.

Special attention is drawn to the videos included in the set. In one of them, a man stands in front of a white background and performs a series of head movements: slowly blinks, looks up, then turns his head clockwise-to the right, down, left and up again, and then repeats the movement in the opposite direction. In another video, he just looks left, right, and center to the sound of background music.

Fotodropy Store claims that it has been professionally engaged in such photography for more than a year. In addition to ready-made kits, the service offers custom production of individual kits. The site has reviews from satisfied customers praising the quality of services.

An interesting feature of the service is the set labeling system. A green check mark on the listing indicates that the kit was sold less than five times. This is important for scammers, because the less often a fake identity is used, the less suspicious it causes online services.

According to David Maimon, a specialist from SentiLink, criminals often pay people small amounts (from $ 5 to $ 20) for taking such photos and videos, for example, in countries like Serbia. These materials are then sold on the black market. Maimon notes that although he did not come across this particular service, such schemes are widespread in the criminal environment.

According to the researchers, such services often offer not only photos and videos, but also fake IDs. This allows scammers to create full-fledged fictitious profiles for registration on various online platforms, including cryptocurrency exchanges.

Of particular concern is the fact that people whose images are used in these kits may not even be aware that their faces are being used in fraudulent schemes. They could just agree to shoot for a small fee, without realizing the consequences of their actions.
