Several residents of the American Houston (Texas) area between the ages of 26 and 62 are suspected of embezzling large sums of money from credit cards they stole from mail. In total, $1.23 million was lost from 210 cards during six months of work.
According to the indictment, the men stole letters containing new credit cards and bank statements from account holders. After that, they called financial institutions with a request to activate the plastic card, increase credit limits and partially change information about it. Subsequently, the balance was spent on the purchase of goods and services, gift cards, and also simply cashed out at ATMs.
All men are charged with conspiracy (maximum sentence of five years), bank fraud (maximum sentence of 30 years), mail theft (also maximum sentence of five years) and aggravated identity theft (carrying a mandatory two-year prison sentence). The potential fine could be close to a million dollars.
