The criminal network that kept global companies at bay has ceased to exist.
As a result of an international law enforcement operation coordinated by Europol, one of the largest groups involved in the distribution of extortionate software was eliminated.
The arrests, carried out by the Spanish Civil Guard, were part of a large operation involving 11 countries. The mission is aimed at eliminating the Ragnar Locker group, which is accused of conducting numerous cyber attacks on critical infrastructure around the world.
In addition to the arrests in Spain, another suspect was arrested in Latvia. During the operation, the group's infrastructure for distributing malware in the Netherlands, Germany and Sweden was eliminated. A website linked to data leaks via the Tor network was also shut down in Sweden. The developers of the Ragnar Locker ransomware were arrested in the Czech Republic, and a number of searches were conducted on the territory of Ukraine.
The investigation was led by the French Gendarmerie, which collaborated with law enforcement agencies from countries including the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Japan, Latvia, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and the United States. During the operations, the Spanish Civil Guard also confiscated various digital assets, such as Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC), Binance Coin (BNB)
Earlier, international law enforcement agencies conducted an operation to block the site of leaks of the Ragnar Locker ransomware group. Europol, the FBI, the German Federal Office for Criminal Affairs and many other organizations participated in the operation.
The Ragnar Locker group, using its unique ransomware, has been linked to attacks on significant infrastructure, including a Portuguese airline and an Israeli hospital.
