The FSB introduces new standards.
The Federal Security Service of Russia has put forward a proposal according to which the organizers of information dissemination on the Internet will have to store data on the geolocation and payment methods of their users. This proposal is part of a draft government decree prepared by the FSB.
These changes imply an adjustment to the data storage rules that were approved in 2020. It is worth noting that the register of information dissemination organizers has been functioning since 2014 and is under the control of Roskomnadzor. This registry includes such large resources as the VKontakte social network, various Yandex services, and many others.
The FSB stressed that at the moment, information about the geolocation of users and the means of payments made by them is not directly indicated in the current rules. However, such data is actually already mentioned in the rules and processed.
The lack of clear standards for the storage and provision of this data can lead to ambiguous practices in their application. This, in turn, may reduce the effectiveness of operational search activities and affect the security of the Russian Federation, as indicated in the statement of the department.
