Attackers use government news to lure out data.

Scammers in the UK have begun to send messages en masse to the elderly with promises of help to pay for heating. The British police and the National Fraud Action Fraud Center have issued an official warning about the increasing number of cases of fraud.

Attackers took advantage of the situation after Chancellor Rachel Reeves decided to reduce winter benefits for most recipients. According to the new rules, only pensioners who receive certain types of benefits will be able to receive assistance to pay for heating.

The government is currently running an information campaign aimed at pensioners whose weekly income is less than £218, urging them to apply for the Pension Credit. However, fraudsters use the increased flow of messages from government agencies in an attempt to fraudulently obtain banking data of the elderly.

According to The Independent, fraudulent reports spoke of the suspension of heating subsidies by parliament and offered the payment of an allowance in the form of a subsistence supplement. The scammers offered to apply by October 23, 2024 and promised to transfer 900 euros in three tranches by November 1, 2024. Below was a link to send data.

The charity Age UK also reported on the spread of similar messages, in which scammers, referring to the onset of winter, offer to update personal data at the specified link to receive heating subsidies.
