Online broker Robinhood reported hacking and data theft of millions of users. The hacker gained access to the company's systems on November 3: e-mail addresses of 5 million people, full names of 2 million and extended data of another 300 thousand users.

Robinhood says social security numbers, bank accounts, or debit cards have not been stolen and customers have not suffered any financial loss. The hacker gained access to the company's systems through a telephone support service: he introduced himself as an employee as an authorized party. Later, a ransom demand was received from the burglar, and the company turned to law enforcement agencies.

Robinhood is investigating the incident in conjunction with Mandiant, a cybersecurity company. Mandiant's chief executive told The Wall Street Journal that the company has already documented the hacker's involvement in other cyber fraud cases. According to the FBI, in 2020, 241,000 American organizations suffered from phishing, and their losses amounted to $ 54 million.

Robinhood has 22.4 million customer accounts with $ 95 billion in assets. The company more than tripled its full-time customer support agents in 2020, and in March pledged to spend $ 11.7 million and hire 400 employees for a new customer support center.
