The gaming giant has exactly one week to protect its secrets from public disclosure.

A hacker group called Mogilevich announced the hacking of the servers of Epic Games, a company known for developing such popular games as Fortnite, Unreal Tournament and Gears of War, as well as developing and supporting the photorealistic Unreal Engine game engine. In addition, the company owns its own online video game store, which has been trying to compete with VALVE's Steam for several years.

A statement about the hack was published on February 27 on the group's darknet leak site. According to a Mogilevich representative, the attack on Epic Games servers was carried out quietly and unnoticed. As a result, the group allegedly obtained 189 gigabytes of confidential company data at its disposal.

The stolen data allegedly includes users personal information, including email addresses, passwords, full names, payment information; as well as the source code of some of the company's products and a host of other data. All this hackers have already put up for sale, and it is far from a fact that the company's competitors will not acquire this data before Epic Games itself.

Mogilevich is a new extortionist group. For the first time its presence in the cybercrime community was indicated on February 20 of this year, when it put up for sale data stolen from Infinity USA, a subsidiary of Nissan. While Epic Games became the fourth victim of this group.

Representatives of Mogilevich do not name a specific amount of ransom for data, and the deadline for paying Epic Games or buying information by someone else is set for March 4. It is important to note that, unlike some previous cases of cyber attacks, the group did not provide any evidence of hacking.

Official representatives of Epic Games have not yet commented on this situation.

It is worth noting that earlier a similar kind of attack was carried out by a related company in the industry — the developer of video games Insomniac Games. As a result, hackers managed to get about 1.7 TB of confidential data, including the pre-release build of Spider-Man 2 for PS5, from which enthusiasts have already collected and posted a playable version for PC, severely hitting Sony's ego and wallet.

Cybersecurity experts continue to closely monitor the activities of the Mogilevich group, trying to compile a complete profile of these attackers. For sure, we will hear more than once about major hacks from this extortionist group.
