The Pentagon is choosing Starshield for its space strategy.

Elon Musk's SpaceX company has signed a contract with the Pentagon to create a military satellite network called Starshield. This information was first published by Bloomberg and was the first confirmed contract between the Pentagon and SpaceX for Starshield.

A U.S. Space Force spokesperson confirmed that the contract was awarded on September 1 with a maximum value of $ 70 million. Initial funding under the contract involves paying SpaceX $ 15 million by September 30. The funds will be used to support 54 military "mission partners" from various departments of the US Department of Defense.

Starshield, introduced last year, is the defense counterpart to SpaceX's Starlink, a consumer satellite network that currently has 4,797 active devices. While Starlink is aimed at ordinary consumers, Starshield is advertised by SpaceX as a specialized solution for national defense. The system will primarily focus on three areas: Earth observation, global communications for government users, and the creation of satellite platforms to fulfill customer tasks.

The latest agreement between SpaceX and the Pentagon is a continuation of their previous cooperation. In June, SpaceX received another contract from the Pentagon, the details of which have not yet been disclosed, for the supply of Starlink ground stations for Ukraine. This happened despite the fact that SpaceX previously stated its desire to limit the use of its terminals by the Ukrainian army against Russia.

Since launching a GPS satellite for the US Air Force in 2018, SpaceX has been actively involved in national security missions. After the creation of the Space Force in December 2019, the company received $ 149 million to develop satellites for tracking rockets. SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets regularly launch military satellites for international customers and secret U.S. government cargo.

The Pentagon is clearly showing interest in SpaceX's proposals, given the company's dominant market position and the reliability of its rockets. The new contract highlights the Space Force's recognition of the capabilities of the Starlink network and the potential contribution of the commercial sector to the US Department of Defense. Through this partnership, SpaceX is strengthening its role as a key defense contractor for the United States.
